Why is staying motivated so darn hard?

Let’s face it, we’ve all been there. You wake up one morning, and it feels like the world is conspiring against you. Your coffee maker breaks, you stub your toe, and your boss dumps a mountain of work on your desk. Suddenly, that fire in your belly starts to fizzle out.

It’s easy to stay motivated when everything’s going your way. But when life throws you a curveball? That’s when things get tricky.

The struggle is real (and totally normal)

First things first, cut yourself some slack. Losing motivation during tough times doesn’t make you weak or lazy. It makes you human. Even the most successful people have days where they’d rather binge-watch Netflix than conquer the world.

Take my friend Sarah, for example. She’s usually a go-getter, but when her startup failed, she spent a whole week in her pajamas, eating ice cream straight from the tub. (No judgment here – we’ve all been there.)

So, how do we keep that motivational fire burning?

1. Break it down, baby

When you’re facing a giant task, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The secret? Chunk it down into bite-sized pieces. Instead of write a novel, try write 500 words today. Suddenly, that mountain looks more like a molehill.

2. Celebrate the small wins

Did you get out of bed today? High five! Seriously, when times are tough, even the smallest accomplishments deserve a pat on the back. It’s like giving your brain a little dopamine treat, encouraging it to keep going.

3. Find your why

When motivation is low, reconnecting with your purpose can be a game-changer. Why are you doing this in the first place? Is it to provide for your family? To make a difference in the world? To prove your high school math teacher wrong? (Hey, we don’t judge.)

4. Surround yourself with positivity

You know that friend who always manages to lift your spirits? Spend more time with them. And maybe less time with Uncle Bob who thinks the world is ending. Your environment has a huge impact on your mindset.

When the going gets tough, the tough get… creative

Sometimes, maintaining motivation requires thinking outside the box. Here are a few unconventional strategies that might just do the trick:

1. The future you technique

Imagine yourself a year from now. What would future you want present you to do right now? It’s like getting advice from a wiser, more accomplished version of yourself. Spooky, but effective.

2. The reverse psychology approach

Tell yourself you’re not allowed to work on your goal today. Suddenly, you might find yourself rebelliously motivated to prove yourself wrong. It’s like telling a toddler not to eat their vegetables – sometimes reverse psychology works wonders.

3. The worst-case scenario game

What’s the absolute worst that could happen if you don’t stay motivated? Often, when we play out these scenarios, we realize they’re not as catastrophic as we imagined. Plus, it can give us the kick in the pants we need to get moving.

Remember, motivation is a rollercoaster

Here’s the truth bomb: motivation isn’t a constant state. It ebbs and flows, just like everything else in life. The key is to build habits and systems that keep you moving forward, even when your motivational tank is running on empty.

Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t wait until you feel motivated to do it, right? (If you do, we need to have a different conversation.) You just do it because it’s part of your routine.

The bottom line

Maintaining motivation during difficult times isn’t about being superhuman. It’s about being persistent, kind to yourself, and a little bit creative. Remember, every successful person you admire has faced their own set of challenges. The difference? They kept going, one small step at a time.

So the next time you’re feeling stuck, remember: this too shall pass. And in the meantime, maybe treat yourself to that ice cream. Just don’t forget to grab a spoon – we’re not animals here.
