Why Bother with an Online Presence?

Let’s face it, if you’re not online these days, do you even exist? I’m kidding… sort of. But seriously, whether you’re a business owner, freelancer, or just someone with a cool hobby, having an online presence is kinda like having a 24/7 billboard about you. Except this billboard can reach people worldwide, and you don’t have to pay ridiculous rental fees.

I remember when my buddy Jake decided to start his handmade furniture business. He thought, I’ll just tell my friends and family, and word will spread. Six months later, he was still sitting on a pile of beautifully crafted tables with no buyers. Why? Because nobody knew he existed beyond his immediate circle.

Getting Started: It’s Not as Scary as You Think

Now, I know what you’re thinking. But I’m not tech-savvy! or I don’t have time for this online stuff! Trust me, I get it. When I first started, my idea of being online was checking my email once a week. But here’s the thing – you don’t need to be a coding wizard or spend 12 hours a day on social media to build a solid online presence.

1. Start with a Simple Website

Think of a website as your online home base. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Just a place where people can find out who you are, what you do, and how to reach you. There are tons of user-friendly platforms out there that make creating a website as easy as making a PowerPoint presentation. Remember, done is better than perfect.

2. Pick Your Social Media Platforms (But Don’t Go Overboard)

Here’s a mistake I see all the time – people trying to be on every single social media platform. It’s like trying to attend five parties in one night. You’ll just end up exhausted and doing a poor job at all of them. Instead, pick one or two platforms where your target audience hangs out and focus on those.

3. Content is King (But Don’t Overthink It)

Creating content doesn’t mean you need to write a novel every day. It could be as simple as sharing a quick tip, a behind-the-scenes photo, or your thoughts on industry news. The key is consistency. It’s like working out – doing a little bit regularly is way better than one massive session once in a blue moon.

The Secret Sauce: Be Authentically You

Here’s the thing about being online – it’s really easy to fall into the trap of trying to be what you think people want you to be. But let me tell you a secret: the most successful <online presence are the ones that are genuinely themselves.

I once worked with a client who was a financial advisor. She kept trying to be all serious and corporate online because she thought that’s what people expected. Her engagement was crickets. Then one day, she accidentally posted a meme about budgeting on her professional page instead of her personal one. Guess what? Her engagement skyrocketed. People loved seeing her personality shine through.

Dealing with the Overwhelm

Look, I get it. Building an online presence can feel like you’re shouting into a void sometimes. You might wonder, Is anyone even seeing this stuff? But here’s the thing – building an online presence is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time, but the payoff can be huge.

Remember Jake with his furniture business? Once he finally got online, created a simple website showcasing his work, and started posting regularly on Instagram, things turned around. Within a year, he had more orders than he could handle. And it all started with just showing up online consistently.

The Bottom Line

Building an online presence; doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Start small, be consistent, and most importantly, be yourself. Before you know it, you’ll have created a digital footprint that not only represents you well but also opens up opportunities you never even imagined.

So, what are you waiting for? The internet’s a big place, and there’s plenty of room for you in it. Time to carve out your own little corner of the digital world. Trust me, future you will thank you for starting today.
